Exchanges between artistic centers

During the reign of Saint Louis (1226-1270), the Paris Basin and Northern France became one of the most dynamic regions for the production of medieval sculpture. This dynamism was illustrated mainly by monumental sculpture for religious buildings, but also by statuary in the round, both monumental and for furniture. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it also led to a break with traditional iconography. Artists sought to create more naturalistic and realistic representations to encourage devotion through emotion. At the same time, the beauty of the saint's physical features and clothing are also on display, to express the beauty of her soul.
