A contemporary garment

Saint Catherine wears a cotte de draps with long sleeves, a garment worn in the 13th and 14th centuries, cinched at the bust and flared at the waist. This is topped by a cotte-hardie, a garment worn by wealthier people. The figure, who lived in late antiquity, is depicted here in contemporary clothes, as if to bring the image of the saint closer to the faithful, thus facilitating devotion.
