In the Gospel of Matthew, it is said that Hell is a place of "weeping and gnashing of teeth," a phrase that appears six times in chapters 8, 13, 22, 24, and 25.
To remind us of what awaits the damned souls in Hell, medieval artists did not hesitate to depict images of torture and punishment. Here, the demon, who is shown in the fragment pointing an object—now lost—towards the man, has been equipped in the digital reconstruction with a two-pronged fork, similar to those used by the torturers of Saint Margaret. The three-pronged fork that demons are often associated with today was not common in 12th-century depictions.
