Nicolas de Largillierre began his training as a painter in 1668 in Antwerp in the studio of Antoine Goubeau (1616-1698). Between 1675 and 1679, he worked at the court of the King of England as assistant to the painter Peter Lely (1618-1680), then returned to Paris in 1679. From 1689, he received recognition for his work and married Marie-Élisabeth Forest (or Marguerite-Elisabeth), daughter of his colleague Jean Forest, with whom he had 3 children: Élisabeth-Marguerite born in 1701, Marguerite-Elisabeth born in 1703 and Nicolas born in 1704. He died in Paris in 1746 at the age of 89 after a partial paralysis.
